I am a Principal UI - UX Architect, Sr. UX Design Team Manager, and UX Strategist. That means I take a holistic approach to UX. So often “Usability” is associated with discovery and design methods like contextual inquiry (field interviews), affinities, white-boarding storyboards, wire-framing, prototyping (from paper to high fidelity), and testing design concepts with qualified users in labs or in their work environment etc… All of these tools for discovery and design are just the tip of the UX Iceberg and a subset of a UX Strategy.
As a strategist it is obvious that the traditional user-centered design strategy that worked for so many years is not enough. Customers no longer engage with average usable designs. Nor are they attracted by a list of features through a single touchpoint or channel.
Instead, todays’ digital customers respond better to designs that delight them by seamlessly integrating their specific devices, context and intent. Design needs to entice, engage and compel the customer to action. It has to be fluid and drive “consumability” not just usability. That means designing for differentiated, flexible customer experiences driven by continuous testing and learning. It’s time to shift our thinking from “users” and “usability”, to “consumers” and “consumability”.
We also must take into consideration "The Internet of Things". IoT, simply explained is the network of physical objects that contain embedded technology to communicate and sense or interact with their internal states or the external environment. For example, the sensors in the tires of my Hummer H2 communicate to my nav screen that one of my tires has low air pressure. The nav screen then displays a list of service centers where I can get the tire examined and repaired. The service center locations and directions are loaded into my GPS and then displayed in real time starting with the location nearest to me. This is the world we live in and UX Strategists need to have a grasp of this multi-channel evolution.
I have over 25 years of experience in the continuous evolution of IxD / UI / UX / UXS / CX and Human Factors Engineering.
I create UX Strategies and Visions, Policies, Governance and Lean UI / UX Processes used in the development of amazing User Centric software products. I have designed, developed, and released numerous high traffic websites and software applications. Some of these applications have over 1,000,000 distinct users each day.
I am very proficient at identifying business, market, and user trends. I design application processes inclusive of these objectives, then validate my designs with various methods of Usability Testing. I use optimized Lean UX / Agile processes with my UI / UX Development teams to create amazing products. I have overseen teams across 3 continents located in Buenos Aires - Argentina, Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia, Delhi - India, Dublin - Ireland, Guangzhou - China, Canada and across the United States. I Mentor my Design Teams in UX Best Practices as well as their personal UX Career Advancement.
~ Extensible UI Design, UX Strategy, UI UX Processes and Governance are my Passion ~
Working with EVP's and Track Directors my teams redesigned and developed Fidelity's Enterprise Business Process Management Software, "XTRAC"
As a Principal UI / UX Architect and Strategist, taking on this project allowed me to introduce the entire "Lean UX" process to Fidelity Executives, Development Architects and Support Teams as we implemented new design. I was responsible for all of the following:
Converting the application from a 10 year old flash/flex product to a highly responsive web application in HTML5/CSS3.
I believe in and evangelize the “Lean UX” process… Why? To put in simple terms, Lean UX is the practice of bringing the true nature of a product to light faster, in a collaborative, cross-functional process with less emphasis on deliverables and greater focus on a shared understanding of the actual experience being designed. Lean UX gets designers out of the deliverables business and back into the experience design business. The Lean UX process keeps the "User's Vision" as the end goal during the Agile development process. All teams work together as one integrated team with user focus as their main objective. The Agile process incorporates MVP, (Minimum Viable Product) in 2 to 3 week sprint releases. Lean UX keeps MVP in check by staying focused on the "User Vision". This keeps the integrated team from releasing a product that meets the User's Expectations half way. Lean UX keeps the integrated team from providing a minimal solution which falls short of the requirements a user wants/needs in an application. At the end of the Lean UX process the User experiences a fully functional, user centric, rich application.
I recommend the book by Jeff Gothelf "Lean UX"! It's great and explains in detail the core principles of Lean UX.
Also, this is a great article which summarizes Lean UX principles: "The 10 Principles of Successful Lean Product Teams".

As a Senior VP of Product Development at Fidelity Investments, I have had the pleasure and opportunity of working with Craig on numerous Web Applications over the past 20 years. He introduced cutting edge UI / UX processes to Fidelity and used those processes to design and develop 3 of Fidelity's most visible applications (New Accounts, Mutual Funds Evaluator and Active trader Pro). These applications, once released, brought millions of dollars in new customer investments to Fidelity.
Craig’s work ethic is impeccable. He never missed a deadline, he always communicated my directives clearly to his teams in Salt Lake and remotely in Boston and Dublin, Ireland. He has a great "Can Do" attitude that he uses to motivate his teams under the extreme pressure of Rapid Software Development.
Scott Player | Senior Vice President, of Product Development @ Fidelity Investments (801) 309-0172
Having Craig on our team gave the engineers a tremendous peace of mind knowing we could focus exclusively on code without having to be concerned about the overall look and feel of our products. His penchant for building applications that delivered a great user experience made him a unique asset to the organization. His keen knowledge of responsive web design also helped shaped our future web and mobile initiatives. I would highly recommend him to any company looking to build the best UI's without compromising the overall quality of the UX.
Will Adams | Senior Software Engineer @ Open Solutions, Inc. (407) 399-9227
After I hired Craig as a Human Factors Engineer (user experience designer) at LANDesk Software, he quickly gained the respect of the human factors, development, and QA teams. While the other Human Factors Engineers were creating user interface prototypes for the development team to build, Craig built the actual user interface that would appear in the product, constructing it in such a way that the developers could hook their code directly to it. The result was a great UI for our users and one of the biggest PR wins for the human factors team.
Craig is a great guy with a strong work ethic, excellent skills and top-notch communication abilities. I'd work with him again in a heartbeat and I strongly recommend him for any team looking for a talented, hard-working team player.
David Payne | Manager, Information Development @ Symantec (801) 380-3417
Craig is a rare combination of skills. You could say he is a user experience designer with great capabilities as an engineer or conversely you could say he is an excellent engineer with great ability to apply user experience.
If you are a small company looking for one person that can do it all Craig is your guy. If you are a large company needing a great team player, Craig is your guy. He has shown an amazing ability to learn and use new tools. To the degree that he can teach the group how to use the tools he has just learned.
Any company would do well to enlist Craig for any endeavor in which they wish to be successful.
